what are you waiting for ? You don't know what you're missing, it's certainly one of the premier nightspots in the city. They have a great dance floor, excellent food, lots of room to sit between dances and more TV's than a Holiday Inn. If you have been there, well then come on back to see us again-we'd love to see your smiling face on the other side of the stage, and we'd love the company.Tuesday, November 3, 2009

Summer's Winding Down........
Well we've zipped through August and are well into September now. As usually happens with our group, we spend an awful lot of time playing outdoors during the summer months. As long as the weather cooperates we love playing outdoors-when it doesn't........well not so much, but we've had very few issues with bad weather over the years.
Liberty Township (now they know how to throw a party!), Ben & Becca Huffman's wedding reception at beautiful and historic Moonlight Gardens (our first time playing there-we'd love to play there again-thanks to Ben & Becca for making us a part of their special day), ~AND~Theo & Megan Papanikolaou's wedding reception at the Marquise Banquet Hall in Wilder (thanks Mr. & Mrs. P-we a great time-yummy desserts too!).

St. Margaret of York '09 & More
In addition to the historical significance of this festival, it's one of the biggest and best in the city-they know how to do it up right! They have great food, great rides, cold beer, margaritas, and a friendly and familiar crowd. We've also heard (uncomfirmed) rumors that they deal a lively game of Blackjack out under the tents-not sure about that, but there always seems to be a crowd there. Come on out and celebrate the season with some horn-charged tunes with Second Wind. We start playing at about 7:30 and wrap up about 11:30.
Now.....what have we been doing for the last few weeks? First, we wrapped our Blast of Brass summer tour with Bluestone Ivory with a fabulous concert at Sharonville's Gower Park on Friday, July 24. The weather was great, the setting was perfect, the crowd was wonderful, and our friends from BSI were great fun to work with. We ended the evening with a powerful set featuring all 17 players from both bands, on stage at the same time. We thank Lee and the rest of the group for conceiving and producing these shows. It took a tremendous amount of time and effort on their part to do so, and we were honored to be a part of such a unique musical event. We all appreciated the opportunity to work with and get to know all of the players in their band better. both personally and musically. Thanks guys-it was great fun!
We've also kept ourselves occupied with wedding receptions for a couple of different friends of the band. We played at the Sheraton in Sharonville, and at the Marriott at Union Centre, and had a great time at both events. We love playing wedding receptions, and it's worth what we charge just to see us dressed up in our fancy duds! If you're interested in having us play at a wedding reception, drop us a line at secondwind-band@cinci.rr.com and we'll contact you for details. We typically do 4-6 weddings per year, and we'd love to do more of them.

Blast of Brass, More Fireworks In St. Bernard & Introducing Our New Member
has left our lineup to pursue other musical and personal interests. While we'll miss Dave's contributions to our band on and off the stage, we're all very excited to introduce and welcome our newest member, Bill Houston. Bill has been a member of two standout local bands, DV8 & Nightlife for the last 18 years. He's performed with our band as a sub a number of times in the past filling in on tenor sax and baritone sax. Bill's primary focus in our group will be on keyboards, but in addition to sax, he also will be doing some work on flute, guitar, and who knows what else? He plays nearly every instrument in the band, and is a lot of fun to watch on stage. In addition to the musical talent that Bill brings to Second Wind, he's a great guy-if you have the opportunity, come on up to him and welcome him to our band. We're sure he'd appreciate it.Wednesday, June 3, 2009
Back At Bar Seventy One And More!
d time. If you've been out there to see us, come on out and join in the fun again-we'd love to see you. If you haven't been there yet, you don't know what you're missing. It's a huge facility with plentiful seating, a huge dance floor, a WONDERFUL staff, great f
ood, and ALWAYS a great crowd. We've always had a great time playing there, and we know you'll have a great time too. It's located at the I-71 North and Mason Montgomery/Fields Ertel Road exit. You'll see the tall sign right next to the exit ramp, and it's located right behind the old Bob Evans restaurant and right next to the DSW Shoe store. As you can tell by the picture, Brian had a GREAT time there last month. Check out their website at http://www.barseventyone.com/ for more details. On Sunday of this week we got together with the boys from Bluestone Ivory for our first group rehearsal for Blast of Brass II. We'll be appearing again this year for joint concerts on July 3 in Fairfield and on July 24 in Sharonville. The two bands will be playing a full final set together featuring some of our tunes, some of theirs, and plenty of sound with a combined 17 piece band with an 8 piece horn section. The rehearsal was pretty spectacular itself-stay tuned for more details.
Monday we got together and practiced with Jamie Steele from The Vibe. Jamie has graciously (and enthusiastically) agreed to help us out for our June 13 concert for Bellevue. Brian has a family commitment that day, so he can't join us, but Jamie is a seasoned pro and we're confident he'll do a great job and help us put on a great show. Come on out and check it out.
See you soon!

A Great Time at WPS & Back at Bar Seventy One
We tried out several of our new tunes and managed to pull all of them off without incident-not a bad first shot! We want to acknowledge and thank our "guest" players, Mark Greiner on bari sax and Bob Adams on trumpet. You guys did a great job, and we appreciate your contributions. We couldn't have done it without you. This Friday night, May 1, John & Blippo are back onstage with us, and we'll be back at one of our new favorite spots, Bar Seventy One at Fields-Ertel and I-71. It's a great spot to eat, drink, be merry, and get down to Horn-Charged Classic Rock n Soul! They have great food a HUGE dance floor, plenty of seating and wonderful bison burgers! All that and some of the coldest beer in town. What more could you ask for?
We'll see you there!

It's GO Time Again!
We're back at one of our favorite spots this Friday, April 24, at Win Place or Show in West Chester. We always see a lot of friendly and familiar faces when we go there, and always have a great time. We put their stage into expando mode and cram ourselves into a cozy space and have at it with our brand of Horn-Charged Classic Rock N Soul. We'll be joined this weekend by our old friend and former sax player Mark "Fern" Greiner on bari filling in for Blippo, and by Bob Adams on trumpet who'll be filling in for John. For those of you who are interested, Blippo's in Austria plying his considerable vocal talents with his church choir, and John's stuck working second shift this weekend-ugh! Mark and Bob have played with us many times in the past and they both do a great job-we look forward to having them on board this week.
We're excited about our summer season. We've recently booked a couple more dates at Bar Seventy-One, and to date we're scheduled to do festivals at St. Margaret of York, St. Susanna, St. Anne, and St. Gertrude, and we'll be doing community concerts for Blue Ash, St. Bernard and Bellevue AND of course we'll be celebrating our "end of summer" as we normally do with our annual appearance at The Vinoklet Art & Wine Festival, the closest thing to Woodstock this side of Pennsylvania. Also, lest we forget, we'll be teaming up with our friends in Bluestone Ivory for two Blast of Brass concerts in July. We're ironing out details, and scheduling some group rehearsals to bring you a show like you've never seen!
Check back for details!

Where We Been & Where We'll Be
We've kept busy the last few weeks with a public appearance at The Redmoor in Mt. Lookout, and a couple of private functions, the Mt. Notre Dame Father/Daughter dance, and a wedding reception at Kenwood Country Club for Amy & Jake Wolfer. The Redmoor is a beautiful and historic venue, and we hope to schedule more dates there in the future. They have an excellent facility there, great ambience and a really nice place. Stay tuned for future dates.
The Mt. Notre Dame function marks our second consecutive year playing for them. It was especially meaningful for a couple of our members, Tom Heitkemper & Paul Wessendarp, because their daughters are seniors at Mt. Notre Dame, and were in attendance that evening. The crowd was "active" to say the least, and while we really don't necessarily want to take direct credit for it, we will point out that the Mt. Notre Dame basketball team went out very shortly after that and won their 4th consecutive state title. You're welcome, ladies!
Finally, last weekend we played for our old friends Dave and Diane Sullivan for their daughter Amy's wedding reception. Like most receptions, it got going a little bit late, built to a quick crescendo right after dinner, then kept going until quitting time. We had a great time performing for the Sullivans, their guests, and of course the new bride and groom, Jake & Amy. We love doing wedding receptions, and always consider it an honor and a privilege to be invited to be a part of such an important event.
Thanks for checking in, and hopefully we'll see you on the other side of the stage real soon!

New Tunes & Our Debut at The Redmoor
This Saturday evening, March 7, we'll be playing at The Redmoor for the first time. For those of you who are not familiar with The Redmoor, it's a classic art deco style building, built in the late 1920's originally as a movie theatre. The current owners have done a w
onderful job of converting it to a premier "event house" without sacrificing the original look and feel of the era. They offer a wonderful atmosphere for a good time, with excellent food in an elegant setting. There is ample seating, a very large dance floor and stage, an in-house PA system and lighting and the acoustics are wonderful. We're very anxious to play there, and we hope you'll come out and join us for a fun and unique evening featuring our own Horn-Charged sounds in a new and unique setting. We might even dress up a little to celebrate the occasion. Curt's promised to iron his jeans and starch his tee-shirt for the occasion. It should be pretty special.............
For those of you looking to join us (and we hope you are) The Redmoor is located at Delta & Linwood, right on Mt. Lookout Square. Some parking is available in the middle of the square, but there are two very large parking lots right behind the building as well. Just turn in the drive right next to The Redmoor and go between that building and the building next door. The place was packed last Saturday night, and there were still plenty of spots to be had.
Come on out and check us out at The Redmoor. We'd love to make a good first impression on them, and nothing makes a more favorable impression than bringing in a big crowd. We'll do our part, like we always do-we're counting on YOU!
See you soon!

Back At Again This Weekend- A New Venue!

Also, this Saturday evening, we're going to put on our tuxes, shine our shoes, and maybe even get Curt to comb his hair so we can properly entertain the members of the Wetherington Golf & Country Club in West Chester at their Valentine's Day Dance. We've played there a few times in the past for individual members, but we're really excited to be playing for the club itself. It's a fabulous facility, and the people there have been wonderful to deal with.
John has work conflicts this weekend, so we'll be joined by Bill Tipkemper at trumpet both Friday and Saturday nights. Bill has played in bands in and around the area for many years, most recently in The Barstool Gypsies. He's also a frequent fill-in for our friends in Bluestone Ivory. We look forward to working with him.
Speaking of Bluestone Ivory, we've just confirmed our second Blast of Brass date for this summer. Like last year, we'll be joining Bluestone Ivory for 2 joint concert presentations. Like last year, each band will present a solo set of their own tunes, but one change that virtually all of us agreed upon is that instead of just joining forces for a couple of songs at the beginning of the evening and a couple more at the end of the evening, the two bands will be playing a full set of music together. Both bands=17 playing members with an 8 piece horn section. Coming at you full-bore. We've got a bit of work ahead of us to get it together, but we're confident it will be even bigger and badder than last year! The dates are July 3 in Fairfield, and July 28 in Sharonville. We'll keep you posted.
Last (but, of course, not least) on the agenda, after being snowed out for several weeks in a row, we were finally able to get in our annual meeting of the minds to discuss band business, equipment issues, new tunes, etc. As usually happens in these meetings, a majority of the time was spent on what new tunes we want to learn and play this year. Everyone has their favorites, so we always end up with a long list. Here's your chance to chime in.....we've listed several of the songs we talked about adding (up at the top and off to the >>>>>right>>>>>>>). Check off the ones you'd most like to see us add-you can check however many you'd like. We'll change the list next week, so check back and vote again. You can also leave any other song suggestions you'd like for us in the "comments" below. Thanks for checking in on us, and we'll see you soon!
